I've not seen your blog before, but I read this post and felt as if I were reading a description of myself! I, too, am a card-carrying introvert and pastor. It's a bit of an odd pairing, but God knows what he is doing.

A book such as you hypothesize would be a great read. I'd love to hear/read the thoughts of others in this position.

Don't forget us a-mills! The golden mean?

On a non-mill point, though, there's an interesting reflection on Peterson by iMonk. The guy (Peterson) is not your run-of-the-mill Evangelical (or one at all, as far as I can tell) but he's got valuable things things to teach us.

So, following on from the above, it would be interesting to see whether the Puritans who were basically postmill, and J. Edwards, and the Princetonians etc. actually did manage to get this right - great industriousness and sacrifice for the gospel, without an unhealthy activism.

Dunno?

I just reckon a postmill perspective brings us

a. Massive encouragement to evangelise, reform the church, transform the culture, in much the same way that Calvinism actually promotes evangelism (God has his elect/ the world will be saved, so get preaching etc.).

b. Patience in doing all the above (which means we can and infact must take our time off, observe the sabbath, be hapy to go long term on loads of things, read, study, leave things for the next generation, etc.).

That's all.
Not to say Postmills always get this right, or that a/ premills can't either. But, being consistent, postmillers should be like that.

I found it hard to judge exactly what his ministry looked like. Judging from comments in one of the books, he's obviously temperamentally driven and busy. But he sometimes made it sound like pastoral ministry is basically puttering around, reading books, hanging out with people, and praying. So, I'm with you, I think. And I'd love you to develop that last comment!

Similar. I got lost somewhere in the middle of it (Contemplative Pastor that is). I felt he regained ground a little towards the end if I remember correctly.

I thought he was an interesting opposite to angsty, con-evo activism ('if we don't burn ourselves out for Jesus who will?'/ 'no time to think about that, get those people into that lifeboat!'), but in the end felt that the two extremes probably need to be brought together in some sort of synthesis. [And I think postmillenialism could help to do this]

I have been enjoying him, though also finding him quirky and puzzling as well. I've read both books pretty quickly in the past couple of days, and I'm not entirely sure what I make of him. In both cases, I enjoyed the first couple of chaps more than the later chaps. In both cases, I'm not sure I have more than an impressionistic impression (!) of the book. I'll ponder some more. I'd love to hear your thoughts too!

Glad you seem to be enjoying Eugene. As you know, I read this with staff and apprentice earlier on this year. Would love to know your thoughts on it as a whole when you're done.
